Prisons and Race in NYS

In New York State in 2009, 84 percent of life sentenced prisoners were black or Hispanic, the highest in the nation, according to a national report by the Sentencing Project. The state also had 1-in-6 prisoners serving life sentences, which was the second highest in the country.
